I first read this book in 2001. Since then, my ability to read spiritual books has pretty much disappeared and I sold or gave most of them away. I held on to a few favorites and this is one of them. I came to spirituality through a scientific search for truth. True science and true spirituality are very similar as they are both based on a courageous and honest investigation into reality and truth. It is actually a very good thing to have a discerning intellect on the spiritual path as it will quickly cut through the delusional belief systems and get right to the point, as this book does. When the intellect is satisfied and transcended, the light of intelligence shines even more brightly as it is free of the limitations of beliefs and concepts. The author of this book does a thorough job of investigating what enlightenment is and is not, why it happens and why it may not, the various paths to it, and the pathless path of true enlightenment. His investigation is comprehensive in that he quotes many authorities ancient and modern, eastern and western, spiritual and scientific. All of their fingers are pointing to the same moon. Reading this book with an open and inquiring mind will definitely trigger many minor and perhaps a few major kenshos or enlightenment expereinces. It may trigger the final one. --By Tom Thompson
