The year is 44 BC and Julius Caesar is at the height of his powers, bestriding œthe narrow worldike œa Colossus. A conspiracy is formed by a group of Roman senators who realize that for the republic to be saved, Caesar must be assassinated. But the senators have different motives: some are spurred on by envy of Caesar's greatness and others, by their patriotism andove for Rome. Unwittingly, they set the course for one of the bloodiest civil wars in history and the eventual collapse of the great Roman republic.

Paperback. Etat : new. Paperback. Oh! How the mighty do fall. Julius Caesar's life is a story of drama and tension like no other, and Shakespeare's play is a timeless rendition of his final days. When Marcus Brutus is swayed by the conniving Senate of Rome, led by the lies of Caius Cassius, he agrees to betray his close friend, Julius Caesar to their cause. Caesar ignores the words of a soothsayer who tells him of his doom, and is soon assassinated by Brutus and the Senate. This play is signified by its timeless diction, the dialogue has entered mainstream popular culture and it has influenced many movies, novels and comic books. Shakespeare composed Julius Caesar in about 1599, using as his source Sir Thomas North's translation of Plutarch's lives, which had been published about twenty years earlier.
