Thomas De Witt Talmage was born on January 7, 1832, in Bound Brook, New Jersey, to David Talmage and Catharine Van Nest Talmage. Raised in a religious household, early influences fostered a strong inclination toward faith and public speaking. Formal education and theological training prepared for a career in ministry, leading to prominent roles within the Reformed Church in America and later the Presbyterian Church. Known for dynamic preaching, sermons drew large congregations and were widely circulated in print, extending influence beyond the pulpit. Writing became an important extension of this work, with essays and religious reflections reaching a broad audience and addressing moral, social, and spiritual concerns in accessible language. Personal life included three marriages, first to Mary R. Avery, followed by Susan Whittemore, and later Eleanor Collier, along with the responsibility of raising seven children. Public recognition grew through both religious leadership and literary contributions, establishing a reputation as a significant voice in American religious life during the nineteenth century. Thomas De Witt Talmage passed away on April 12, 1902, in Washington, D.C., leaving a legacy marked by influential preaching and widely read devotional writing.
