Epilepsy is a common condition among children. Unfortunately, many have seizures that are refractory to currently available therapies. The stress that patients and families experience when seizures are poorly controlled is all too familiar to anyone interested in this topic. This book is for people who want to learn more about epilepsy in children, and about what can be done to improve the life of those patients and their families. We are hopeful that this text makes a modest contribution to the multifaceted process of caring for children with epilepsy. While our intended audience is the medical practitioner, we believe that the book s chapters are accessible and informative to most readers, including researchers, allied health providers, and parents. We live in an era when things change very quickly. The accelerating pace of medical discovery makes it hard for one to remain abreast of all innovations, even in a specialized field. Hence we wanted to create a resource for what is new and topical in the field of pediatric epilepsy. While such a book is in danger of becoming dated by the time it is printed, these chapters serve to familiarize the reader with recent developments in childhood epilepsy. By glancing at the chapters titles the reader can ascertain which topics we considered to be particularly important. Some authors addressed mainstream issues that need regular updates, such as new drug development, and the surgical treatment of epilepsy. Others reviewed the current level of knowledge on emerging clinical issues that call for increasing awareness on the part of the pediatric neurologist, such as bone health in children with epilepsy, the reciprocal relationship between sleep and epilepsy, and the role of EEG monitoring in the pediatric ICU. In at least one chapter, the authors discuss a topic that is unfamiliar to most of us, specifically, the concepts, history and treatment approach of traditional Chinese medicine to seizures and epilepsy. As Editors, our primary goal was to provide an answer to the question what is new? in our field. To that end, we were pleased to have been able to provide a forum not only for seasoned and well-established authors, but also for up-and-coming epileptologists. We thus believe to have answered not only what is new? but also who is new? We wish to thank the authors for their contributions. We recognize they are all busy individuals for whom time for discretionary projects such as this book is limited and precious. Their efforts are greatly appreciated.
