From the preface Dozens of biographies in many languages have been produced over the 40 years of the Cuban revolution probing the man whose bearded face [is] one of the best known physiognomies in the contemporary world. This book is unique in that it presents the first collection of autobiographical sketches by Fidel Castro a man who has guarded his personal life so closely especially the period of his childhood and youth. At the age of 26 in July 1953 Fidel Castro led a youthful group of 160 armed combatants to attack the Moncada Army barracks in Santiago de Cuba coordinated with a support action in Bayamo. The goal was to spark a popular uprising against General Batista who had seized power in a military coup on March 10 1952. Most of the young rebels not killed in the attack were captured and tortured. Having only graduated from law school a few years previously Fidel Castro who was kept in isolation for most of his time in prison prepared his own defense. He used his courtroom appearance to argue for revolutionary change in Cuba concluding with a defiant statement Condemn me. It does not matter. History will absolve me. 146 pp. N° de réf. du vendeur 51404
