Educated at St. Aloysius College, Mangalore & Loyola College Madras, Mr. Nazareth was selected for the Indian Foreign Service in May 1959 and served in India’s diplomatic missions in Tokyo, Rangoon, Lima and London before his first Ambassadorial appointment in 1979 as High Commissioner/Ambassador of India to Ghana, Liberia, Upper Volta and Togo. Subsequently was Director General, Indian Council for Cultural Relations, New Delhi, Consul General of India in Chicago and New York, Ambassador of India to Egypt, and Ambassador of India to Mexico, Guatemala. Ambassador Nazareth retired in May 1994 and in the years thereafter has been Guest lecturer at National Defence College, New Delhi, Banaras Hindu University and National Institute of Advanced Studies/IIMB Among foreign universities Mr. Nazareth has lectured at are East West Centre and University of Hawaii at Honolulu, UC Berkeley, Stanford, American, Yale, Columbia and New York Universities and MIT in the USA, El Collegio de Mexico in Mexico, Uppsala University in Sweden, Ateneo and Philipines Universities and Asian Institute of Management at Manila, Udayana and Shiyarif Hidayatullah Universities in Indonesia, Universities of Trinidad & Tobago and of the West Indies at Port of Spain and Fudan, South China & Sun Yat Sen Universities in China . In 2006, Ambassador Nazareth’s ‘Gandhi’s Outstanding Leadership’ book was published. It was released in New Delhi by the former Prime Minister of India Dr. I.K. Gujral and at the UN in New York by then Under Secretary General Shashi Taroor. This book has been widely acclaimed including by President of India A.P.J. Abdul Kalam and US President Barack Obama. It has come out already in twelve Indian languages as also in Arabic, Dutch, German, Hungarian, Indonesian, Italian, Korean, Mandarin, Nepali, Portuguese, Russian, Serbian, Spanish, Swedish and Turkish. On October 9, 2007 Mr. Nazareth was presented the U Thant Peace Award by the Sri Chinmoy Meditation Group at the United Nations, for his ‘Life Time of Dedication and World Service by promoting the Gandhian Values of Truth, Non Violence, Communal Harmony and Humanitarian Service’. Among previous recipients of this Award are Pope John Paul II, The Dalai Lama, Mother Theresa, Mikhail Gorbachev, Nelson Mandela and Archbishop Desmond Tutu. On October 2, 2012 Ambassador Nazareth delivered the keynote address at the International day of Non Violence event at the United Nations in New York.

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi is known throughout the world as the Mahatma (“the Great soul”). He is one of the most remarkable thinkers of the 20th century. There are a lot of books, articles, scientific studies and movies dedicated to him. It would seem that nothing more could be added to the already well formed image of this great figure. However, the ‘ Gandhi’s Outstanding Leadership’ book authored by the Indian diplomat Pascal Alan Nazareth has aroused much global interest. It has been published already in 12 Indian languages and 15 foreign languages (including a Mandarin edition in 2013, Arabic, Russian and Turkish editions in 2014, Italian and German editions in 2015; Swedish, Dutch, Hungarian and Serbian editions in 2016).
