Synopsis

Realizing the crucial role of the banks, Govt. of India nationalized fourteen major commercial banks in July 1969, and later on six more in April 1980. They act as a catalyst in the all round development of the country mobilizing the necessary resources to enhance the productivity of economy. Prof. Dr. R. Gadgil s recommendations in adoption of an area approach led to the formulation of the Lead Bank Scheme. In this context, it may be mentioned that the performance of Syndicate Bank both during the pre and the post nationalization periods was adjudged to be have performed reasonably good. As a result, Syndicate Bank is working as Lead Bank in 622 districts in India. One such lead bank has been functioning in Anantapur District.
