The scene has now shifted from my first book about Calcutta, Hooghly Tales, to Madras, an historic city on the east coast of South India, which housed the first British settlement in 1640, and represented the seat of power on the Coromandel Coast. Developing from a strip of land into a thriving metropolis, today's Madras encompasses two rivers: the Cooum and the Adyar, which divide the city and flow into the sea. The meeting of these two rivers is implemented by the Buckingham Canal, a project of the Duke of Buckingham and Chandos, to provide relief for a famine stricken Madras in 1876. Running parallel to the coast and through almost the entire length of the city, this waterway is one of its most useful and significant landmarks. These memories take the reader through our Madras life, painting pictures of the places, events, the beautiful houses we lived in, and the wonderful people we came to know. When we left in 1972, we took Madras with us; it was a long time before I would be able to call England my home. Not so with Gerry. No sooner had we driven out of the gates of Malmesbury, our final residence, England became Home, and India was a place we would visit every year, in the winter.
