Synopsis

The purpose of the writing is to recognize the role of libraries in peace education. The power and influence of sustainable resources such as books in life of peace activists such as Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King, Jr. and nonviolent movements provoked the discussion. The author attempted to explore phenomena and a literature review provides the essence of the concept of library and peace education as a basis for investigating the relationship and offers the holistic peace education theory that describes peace learning methodology and peace as a method for differentiating data, information, knowledge, and wisdom.Libraries contribute to peace through information and knowledge management. ‘Education for Peace’ i.e. role of libraries in education and development through resources and programs (Indirect) and ‘Education about Peace’ i.e. role of libraries in peace through resources and programs (Direct) are two major themes of peace education. The ‘Education for peace’ theme is more relevant and effective than ‘Education about peace.’ Libraries promote peace through principles of integrity, impartiality and independence. Libraries facilitate a holistic, liberal and lifelong learning environment and a harmonious interaction within formal, non-formal and informal learning settings. Libraries contribute to peace and peace education through self-learning, lifelong learning, and programming. Libraries are helpful in attaining peace in different dimensions i.e. inner and outer; micro and macro; educational, cultural, social, spiritual, ethical and moral, political, legal, economic, environmental, security; cultivate knowledge, skills and attitudes that lead to a peaceful society through a peaceful behavior and conflict resolution. Data, information, knowledge and wisdom are key elements of the peace hierarchy. Peace is a holistic, liberal, lifelong, transformative and dynamic process grounded in experience. Peace learning is the function of personality, material, energy, space, and time. The book demonstrates the potential of libraries as a special peace zone and the wisdom based peace movement based on the scientific model of the holistic peace education theory and therein suggests a proposal for Peace Education Program.
