9788301023812: Mechanics of Viscoelastic Fluids

Synopsis

The book gives, in a relatively concise but sufficiently general manner, an exposition of the fundamentals of the mechanics of viscoelastic fluids and its relation to modern continuum mechanics. The most important considerations are those concerned with the cognitive character of the various theories, their experimental verification and possible applications.

The arrangement of the material in the book reflects the principle that information about the properties of viscoelastic fluids depends in an essential way on the class of flows under consideration. Chapter 1 contains a brief account of the basic concepts. Chapter 2 discusses the general theory ofthe constitutive equations of simple fluids and presents in an encyclopaedic manner the most important models. Chapter 3 is devoted to the class of viscometric flows which play an important part in processing and laboratory research. The classes of flows with constant and proportional stretch histories are considered in Chapter 4. Chapter 5 treats more extensively complex and dynamic flows, paying considerable attention to disturbed flows and slightly viscometric flows. Finally, the secondary flows, some stability problems and certain aspects of shear-wave propagation are examined in Chapter 6.

The book is intended for scientists, postgraduate students and other students interested in the mechanics of viscoelastic fluids. Specialists in the fleld of polymer processing will also find it useful.

Stefan Zahorski (b. 1933), lecturer at the Technical University of Warsaw in 1954-1961; Head of the Polymer Physics Laboratory at the Institute of Fundamental Technological Research in Warsaw since 1969, professor at the Polish Academy of Sciences since 1972. Author of 2 books and over 90 papers on finite elasticity, plasticity, rheology and mechanics of non-Newtonian fluids published in various international and domestic periodicals.
