Synopsis

Preparing the book, the authors wanted to avoid elementary information on the standard testing of the mechanical properties of materials, already available in other textbooks. Thus information concerning various standard testing techniques has been significantly reduced. Information concerning all kinds of testing under standard uniaxial loadings has also been minimized, while advanced tests under non-standard conditions such as high pressure, complex stress states, high deformation rates, cyclic loading of the fatigue type, various advanced rheological tests, etc., are discussed at length. The authors hope that the book will inspire research workers, in particular those younger and less experienced, to search for new, inventive and nonstandard methods and techniques in their experimental investigations. Thus the authors have attempted to focus the attention of the reader onto 'experiments with an inventive idea' concerning both the technique of the experiment itself and the interpretation of results. The authors have tried to demonstrate that the experiment is the foundation of the mechanics of deformable solids, and that without it the formulation of any theory, particularly in the non-linear range, is extremely difficult. In the book, numerous figures and schematics of non-standard experimental devices designed in research laboratories are described. Description of standard testing machines produced by specialized manufacturers has been omitted. Special attention is paid to the authors' own results in experimental mechanics and it is hoped that these will be of interest to the reader. Parts 1, 2 and 3 discuss the problems of testing the plastic behaviour of metals, rheological properties of various materials and the problems of fatigue failure of metals. Parts 4 and 5 are devoted to the presentation of the most important contemporary methods of stress and strain measurement in structures and their models. Only optical methods are discussed.
