Otto I was also driven by an ambition to unite whole of the Christian world. He had just been crowned emperor.
The 10th century Poles absolutely loved it! They were just emerging out of the tribal magma and had to split with paganism as quickly as they now wish to forget Communism. In order to aoid being converted to Christianity by the sword, and to enter the forerunner of the European Union, they needed a protector.
