More than 70 works and projects, with a large number of photographs and drawings specially produced for this edition of the output of one of the most important architectural pioneers of this century. R. M. Schindler (1887-1953) left Vienna in 1914 and emigrated to the United States to work with Frank Lloyd Wright. His own work in California combines O. Wagner's ideas about modernity, Loos' Raumplan and Wright's buildings' relationship to the landscape, putting together the best of Central European architectural culture with what he learned from the American Master Frank Lloyd Wright.

| Schindler s method of working was unconventional. Unlike the Corbusian ideal of the architect-engineer, Schindler practised more as an artist-builder. Partly to augment his always meager income, Schindler also worked as a general contractor on many of his designs. Working in this way, with a small crew with whom he communicated well, Schindler had more control over the built project as well as the budget. Construction drawings were often minimal and the complex spaces could better be understood and built with Schindler s close supervision, making adjustments and changes in the field as the building construction progressed. By this method, each built project was a very personal creation. His confidence as a builder must have been aided by his degree in structural engineering and by his ability to do all his own calculations. He could clearly judge the easiest way to build his space-forms and had no qualms about making changes in the field. Schindler s many commissions were largely for single-family houses, both new constructions and remodels. He also built more than a half dozen apartment buildings, some commercial interiors, a few new commercial buildings, and one small church. Some of the commissions were for tiny remodels or just furniture. This book presents more than 70 works and projects, with a large number of photographs and drawings specially produced for this edition. The clients who were drawn to Schindler s work were often themselves artists. Mrs. Freeman was a dancer, Herman Sachs a painter, Mildred Southall a pianist, Micha Kallis and Hilaire Hiler both painters, etc. The artistic life that centered around the Kings Road house involved Schindler both with artists and other sorts of radical thinkers. |
