The starting-point for the photography of Kooi (born 1962, Leeuwarden, The Netherlands) is the Dutch landscape, which she transforms into the setting for ambiguous and inexplicable events. The apparent naturalism of her images, which always have the spontaneity of a snapshot, derrives from a complex creative process involving preparatory drawings, models, and design of the lighting and location in a way comparable to film or to the great Baroque paintings. This blending of naturalism and artifice gives Ellen Kooi's photographs a troubling atmosphere that irresistably attracts and holds the viewer's gaze. Recent exhibitions and shows: "Espacio Liquido" (solo show), "Gijon" (SP); Galerie Les Filles du Calvaire, Paris (FR); CPIF Art Centre, Paris (FR); NY C Photo, Philips de Pury & Company, NY, USA; Catherine Clark Gallery (solo show) San Francisco (USA); LUMC, Leiden (NL); Clay Center for the Arts, West Virginia (USA); PULSE London, by PPOW (NY, USA), ARCO Art Fair/ DFOTO - San Sebastian International Contemporary Photography and Video-Art Fair/Art Brussels, presented by Les Filles Du Calvaire, (Paris); Art Chicago, presented by PPOW (NewYork, USA); Centro Atlantico de Arte Moderne (CAAM), Gran Canaria (SP); and Night & Day, Vishal Haarlem (NL).

The catalogue for an exhibition of work by the Dutch photographer Ellen Kooi (b. 1962), held at La Casa Encendida, Madrid, April 16 - June 15, 2008. "The point of departure for Kooi's photographs is the Dutch landscape, which she transforms and uses as the backdrop for ambiguous, inexplicable events. The seemingly natural appearance of her images, which have the spontaneity of a snapshot, belies an intricate production process involving preparatory drawings, models, lighting design and careful staging, not unlike the methods used by old Baroque masters or modern film directors. This blend of nature and artifice lends Kooi's images an unsettling quality and irresistible visual appeal." Photographs by Ellen Kooi; texts by Rafael Roncero, Octavio Zaya, and Catherine Somze. Unpaginated [188 pages]; color plates throughout; 11 x 8 inches. Text in English. N° de réf. du vendeur 21121

Hardcover. Etat : New. The starting-point for Kooi s photographs (born 1962, Leeuwarden, Netherlands) is the Dutch landscape, which she transforms into the setting for ambiguous and inexplicable events. The apparent naturalism of her images, which always have the spontaneity of a snapshot, in fact derives from a complex creative process involving preparatory drawings, models, and design of the lighting and location in a way comparable to film or to the work of the great Baroque painters. This blending of naturalism and artifice gives Ellen Kooi s photographs a troubling atmosphere and one that exerts an undeniable attraction over the viewer s gaze. N° de réf. du vendeur 77780
