Présentation de l'éditeur

The rise of China is changing the dynamics of the international system. This work analyzes how the group of states referred to as "middle powers" are responding to China's growing economic, diplomatic, and military power. Middle powers are those states with capabilities immediately below those of great powers, but still far above most other states. Middle powers are significant as trading partners and allies or adversaries in matters of regional security, nuclear proliferation, and global governance issues such as human rights and climate change. This book provides cases of middle-power relations with China. The countries covered are South Korea, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Australia, South Africa, Turkey, and Brazil. It addresses how these states are responding to a rising China; what impact Chinese power is having on them; and whether they are being drawn to China or repelled by its new power and assertiveness. The work also explores how much (or little) China values middle powers and whether or not middle powers can shape China's behavior.
