A good and clean copy. - From the text: Despite the many different problems debated in Lars Mathisen's work, in various shapes, ranging from video-installation to multiples, one theme appears as consistently distinctive. The problem of relation - in a large sense - between the artificial, that is, the made perse, and the Imaginary, in the expanded sense of world-creation, especially as 'set' by way of anxiety, fright, horror perse. One may thus say that his work marries two extremes of human Being. One being the made - an older view would see it as external, or material - in its particular character of fulfilling Being at will, as artificial entities, from everyday garbage to software. The other being the kingdom of the creative imaginary, the psyche, the capability for fancy, for making believe, for making the world into a created fact for humans - seen by an older view as internal, or mental. Now, the main liaison, and the main idea Mathisen wants to ponder is how the artificial may fold with the imaginary, how these two, as instances of Being for humans, may engender feedback between particularly sensed forms of horror, affect, abjection, and the effectually made, in the present installation On/off The Beaten Track Mathisen applies a very current icon of Western-style affluence, the car, more precisely the American Sports utility Vehicle - the SUV - in the installation exemplified by the Hummer, as focal point for invoking this relation as a wider form of estrangement.
