Some people are able to be different - people - at the same time. Angelo Martins Jr. is one of them, and this is the reason why his book is so captivating. Its narrative takes us into the daily lives of immigrants who, like him, worked hard in London as cleaners, kitchen-hands, porters and waiters. It tells the stories of Brazilians who, like him, have understood more about their own country when living abroad. It also speaks of Europeans and half Europeans, like him, and the various senses of the word 'border'. The book contributes significantly to the field of migration studies, by both its theoretical approach, and by articulating different methods besides participant observation. Emotions, such as freedom, achievement, fatigue, anger and loneliness, spring from its pages to then produce understanding later on. The lives in motion that Angelo Martins Jr describes in this book are not only his own experiences, but are also experienced by millions of migrants around the world. Now, they are also ours. The book faces the challenge of translating a lived experience into high quality sociological work. His work reveals an era where belonging has become an issue to many individuals therefore a political and social problem of the first magnitude. --Professor Gabriel Feltran, Federal University of São Carlos (UFSCar) Coordinator of the Research group NaMargem - Centre for urban research (Brazil)

In his book, Lives in Motion, Martins Junior exposes the life experiences of Brazilian immigrants in the UK. By distancing his analyses from theoretical approaches which focus merely on the economic aspects of migration, he seeks to recover the various motivations which mark the paths of these migrants. From an ethnographic research, in which he himself performed various jobs, such as cleaning and catering, Martins Jr composes a picture of the every day life of these immigrants. The result of rigorous academic research, this book escapes the typical clichés of specialized language, written as a light and pleasant, almost literary text. The reading flows easily, portraying the migrant s diverse experiences upon arrival, their survival strategies and the daily confrontation of loneliness, social isolation and prejudice. It then hits on the prospects for the future of these workers and immigrants, who sometimes reinforce the idea of one day returning to their country, and sometimes staying in London one of the main capitals of globalization, with all its dangers and seductions. To sum up, the book is a contemporary portrait of our times, shedding light on the instability of social relations and the constant mobility of peoples and objects -- --Distinguished Professor Jacob Lima, Federal University of São Carlos (UFSCar) Coordinator of the Work and Mobility Study Group (Brazil)
