Jacqui Chaplin grew up seventh of nine children. She is the eldest of three adopted children in the family. Born and bred in Melbourne, Australia Jacqui grew up in the south eastern suburbs and spent her teenage summers at Elwood Beach. The breakdown of her first marriage in the early 1990 s ignited her first diagnosed encounter with depression s black dog. Hence, the first part of the title of this book. Over the next two decades Jacqui rollercoastered through many minor, and another two significant depressive episodes. In 2013 she was officially diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder Type II. Hindsight and knowledge allowed her to see that she had been experiencing bipolar symptoms for two decades. With 15 plus years experience as an executive and corporate coach Jacqui has helped many people move toward their human potential. Now she is also a keen advocate of speaking openly and comfortably about mind health matters. Jacqui practices what she preaches. She hosts a weekly radio program called But I Feel Good ...talking about pink elephants (resilience strategies) and black dogs (depression and other down sides of mental illness). She lives in Melbourne with her husband, Chris her counter balance.
Chaplin discloses a life of hectic roller coaster rides and 'black dog' terrors that have formed the painful experiences of her life for more than 20 years. As a diagnosed manic depressive with a fulfilling and exciting life, Jacqui strongly believes that the more people who are willing to talk openly about their lived experiences with mental illness the better. This book takes an inside look at living with mental illness and how taking care of mind health and well being need not preclude living a wonderful, productive and fulfilling life. This candid autobiography serves to support those living with mental illness in two ways. Firstly to know they are not alone. Secondly, that there is hope and a way out of the black hole of despair that can accompany mental illness.
