Enabling Technologies for the Internet of Things: Wireless Circuits, Systems and Networks collects slides and notes from the lectures given in the 2017 Seasonal School Enabling Technologies for the Internet-of-Things, supported by IEEE CAS Society and by INTEL funding, and organized by Prof. Sergio Saponara, and Prof. Giuliano Manara.
The book discusses new trends in Internet-of-Things (IoT) technologies, considering technological and training aspects, with special focus on electronic and electromagnetic circuits and systems. IoT involves research and design activities both in analog and in digital circuit/signal domains, including focus on sensors interfacing and conditioning, energy harvesting, low-power signal processing, wireless connectivity and networking, functional safety (FuSa). FuSa is one of the emerging key issues in IoT applications in safety critical domain like industry 4.0, autonomous and connected vehicles and e-health. Our world is becoming more and more interconnected. Currently it is estimated that two hundred billion smart objects will be part of the IoT by 2020. This new scenario will pave the way to innovative business models and will bring new experiences in everyday life. The challenge is offering products, services and comprehensive solutions for the IoT, from technology to intelligent and connected objects and devices to connectivity and data centers, enhancing smart home, smart factory, autonomous driving cars and much more, while at the same time ensuring the highest safety standards. In safety-critical contexts, where a fault could jeopardize the human life, safety becomes a key aspect.

Sergio Saponara got the M.Sc. cum laude, and Ph.D. in Electronic Engineering from the University of Pisa. He is IEEE Senior Member and IEEE Distinguished Lecturer. In 2002, he was with IMEC, Leuven (B), as Marie Curie Research Fellow. He is Full Professor at University of Pisa in the field of electronic integrated circuits and systems, including wireless systems. He is also a Professor at the Italian Naval Academy. He co-authored about 300 scientific publications in peer reviewed international journals and conferences, 17 patents, a book on radar design. He is also a research associate of CNIT and INFN and is an associate editor of IEEE Consumer Electronics Magazine, IEEE Vehicular Technology Magazine, IEEE Canadian Journal of Electrical and Computer Engineering, SpringerNature Journal of Real-time Image Processing, Electronics Letters, MDPI Designs, and guest editor of the SpringerNature Journal on Embedded Systems and IEEE Transactions on Industrial Informatics. He has been involved in the organization committee of about 130 conferences of IEEE and SPIE. He has been guest editor of several special issues, and invited/plenary speaker in several conferences, of IEEE, SPIE, Elsevier. He also got several best paper/presentation awards. He is the responsible of the summer school "Enabling technologies of IoT" and of the CrossLab "Industrial IoT" both at the University of Pisa. In 2014, he co-founded IngeniArs srl, a start-up company where he is Chief Technical Officer. He has been responsible for Pisa University or IngeniArs of several research projects funded under EU or ESA programs. He has been consultant for the R&D centers of industries such as STMicroelectronics, Renesas, AMS ag, Ericsson, SelexGalileo, Magna Closures, Rico, Flyby, PPC. He is co-founding member of the IEEE CASS IoT Special Interest Group and member of the World Forum on IoT plus other 3 IEEE standardization initiatives and 4 IEEE Technical Committees.
