Synopsis
Ancient Thebes, on the west bank of the Nile opposite the modern city of Luxor, is probably the richest archaeological site in the world. The area has attracted travellers since ancient times (most notably Napoleon Bonaparte, and many have left their impressions of the monuments in the form of maps, historical books, scholarly studies and travel guides.
