Synopsis
Vengono raccolti in questo volume, edito in italiano e inglese, i risultati della campagna di restauro condotta dal Laboratorio Restauro Dipinti e Manufatti Lignei dei Musei Vaticani sugli affreschi della Cappella di San Lorenzo, all'interno del Santuario della Scala Santa. Sia la pubblicazione che il restauro sono stati realizzati grazie al supporto dei Patrons of the Arts in the Vatican Museums. Tra i vari interventi nel volume, da segnalare: i Passionisti Tito Amodei e Ottaviano D’Egidio, che introducono alla storia del luogo, dal Patriarchìum alle diverse modifiche successive; Alessandro Zuccari (Sapienza – Università di Roma), che indaga l’organizzazione del cantiere incaricato della decorazione ricostruendo la complessa struttura piramidale che lo governava; Carla Hendriks, che si sofferma invece sulla vedute di paesaggio all’interno della Cappella di San Lorenzo da molti attribuite al pittore fiammingo Paul Bril. Segue una sezione dedicata ai risultati del restauro, nella quale Paolo Violini, che dell'intervento è stato coordinatore, oltre a essere uno dei curatori del volume, illustra scelte e metodologie adottate. L'apparato fotografico contribuisce a rendere maggiormente fruibili i testi permettendo a un ampio pubblico, di esperti o semplici appassionati, di godere a pieno del delicato lavoro dei restauratori e restituisce, con vivida intensità, la bellezza ritrovata degli affreschi sistini.

This book, published in Italian and English, is entirely dedicated to the recent restoration of the Holy Stairs, the adjacent staircases and the atrium. It concludes a wide project focused on the renovation of the whole Sanctuary, one of the most representative complex of the Christian devotion, started years ago with the restoration of the chapels of St. Silvestro and St. Lorenzo. A first part of the work is focused on the history of the Holy Stairs, with essays. Among many others, the essays by Alessandro Zuccari and Carla Hendriks examine the origin of the frescoes and their attributions. The second part is mainly dedicated to the restoration: Paolo Violini, coordinator of the works and editor of the volume, clearly explains the initial condition and the methods used during the demanding conservative work. The photographic set is particularly rich, and so it is the graphic documentation of the interventions included at the end of the book. The tables reproduce the entire iconographic cycle of the Historia Salutis, with the stories of the Old and New Testament frescoed along the lateral and central staircases, allowing us to closely admire the delicate work of the restorers, who have brought the frescoes back to their original aspect, cleaning them out from the nineteenth-century repainting.
