For many years I have seen the French Riviera during the winter only. I took photographs as it appeared, void, without people, but with those clouds and those evanescent pastel fades that characterize this piece of coastline. One year and one year only, I decided to go back there during the summer as well. I took photos of those same places that I had shot the previous year. A lapse of only eight years divides these two moments of the work, but the feeling you get is completely different. A bright and sharp light has changed the colours. Things and objects that used to vanish in the hue of the sea have changed their identities. The clouds that before mingled with the water are there no longer. The sky is blue, bright, clear; the horizon is spotless. I realize that the act of photographing used to be a contemplative and ecstatic moment and now has turned into the testimony of a new way of being in the space. Places are the same ones yet their souls have changed. Time and men with their interventions have turned them, violated them, perhaps forever, in my memory. MARCO RIGAMONTI
