We can choose to define the island as a quantifiable physical place, but it is so much more. An island to describe, measure, and interpret spatial mutations in the result of a conviction, a need and an absession: the conviction that the islands are hot spots of territorial changes; the necessity to analyze changes in sensitive contexts; the personal obsession for the island, a geographic device, conceptual as well as physical, which is both form and shape, a universal representation of the world.

This publication is the initial inspiration for the construction of a possible taxonomy of islands, too wide to be inclusive, in which the islands are considered sensors of change.
