In accordance with the Alps and Carpathian Conventions, the European Landscape Convention, and the Birds and Habitats Directives, the research project "Access2Mountain" aims to promote the improvement of accessibility in mountain areas. This is a crucial step in ensuring the sustainable social, economic and cultural development of these isolated locales.

While the primary interest is encouraging tourism, this must be managed in such a way that it does not damage delicate alpine ecosystems. This book proposes methods for the containment and reduction of the negative impacts of tourism on the natural-cultural heritage of an area - such as heavy traffic, pollution, and the movement of people. Their landscape-centric vision is at the core of 'Access2Mountain's' analyses and designs.

The book is organised on a trans-scale dimension, moving fluidly from the local level to the environmental component, to the goal of tourism and the model region. The final output is a "system of thinking" for the decision making processes in sensitive mountain landscapes.
