To accompany the existing Index (of Persons), this Index of Subjects has been prepared. Intended as an extra aid when using "The Encylopaedia of Islam", it provides a guide in the form of a thesaurus. Entries are given in English and French and are followed by the titles of the relevant "Encylopaedia of Islam" articles, as well as by cross-references to articles which are not primarily about that subject, but include information which could be useful. The text should be useful for the Islamologist, the student of the history and culture of the peoples of Islam, as well as for the more general geographer and sociologist.
