On 29 and 30 September 2005, a scholarly conference was held in Groningen under the name 'The Dutch constitutional monarchy in a changing Europe'. The occasion was the 25th jubilee of Queen Beatrix.

Different scholarly disciplines reflected on the meaning of the Dutch constitutional monarchy at present. The starting point for the conference committee was that a multiform and critical group of intellectuals would speak, in order to include as many aspects in the debate as possible. Does the
constitutional monarchy conflict with fundamental and democratic notions? Is a hereditary monarchy still acceptable in these modern times? And what does the European unification mean for the Dutch constitutional monarchy as a system of
government?

Whereas one would expect the presentation of very diverging and antithetic opinions, the conference displayed a remarkable consensus on the meaning of the Dutch constitutional monarchy. From various perspectives, speakers
and reviewers demanded attention for the contribution, which is seen as positive, of the current Dutch monarchy to society and democracy.
