What if a museum weren’t a house of certainties, but a place where thinking reshapes itself?

As a veterinarian at Ghent University, Prof. Dr. Marjan Doom conducted research into animal anatomy, with a specific focus on the vascular system. As director of the Ghent University Museum and its neighbouring Botanical Garden, she explores the intersections of science, art, and society. Her work highlights doubt, imagination, and critical thinking as essential to science, art and citizenship. She is a public speaker (TEDx), a board member at Musea Brugge and Forum Wissen (University Museum of Göttingen), and a member of the faculty in the Culture & Education research group at Ghent University.
In The Museum of Doubt, Prof. Dr. Marjan Doom proposes a new model for science museums – not as temples of facts, but as laboratories of perspectives. A space where doubt is not a weakness, but an invitation to deepen. Where science and art meet to foster critical citizenship. Drawing on her experience, Doom explores how exhibitions, objects, and language can encourage polyphonic thinking. She shows how a museum is not merely a transmitter of knowledge, but a scene where questions take the lead - and where friction and transformation are integral to the experience.
The Museum of Doubt is a committed manifesto for those who see science not as a final destination of truth, but as an ongoing, vulnerable quest in an increasingly complex world.

"This is a place where different voices and ideas meet, inspiring visitors through the unexpected plurality of meanings and interactions presented in the different themes and the way they are displayed. Instead of proclaiming one truth, the museum invites and embraces a multitude of perspectives, allowing a dynamic discourse in narratives dealing with very topical issues." - Jury EMYA (European Museum of the Year), special commendation 2022In a world longing for certainty and clear-cut answers, the Museum of Doubt makes a powerful case for doubt, vulnerability, and complexity as driving forces of both science and citizenship.
