Despite its potential influence on the standard language, there is still relatively little written about the language of the young. This book gives new insight into some important areas of their language, such as identity construction reflected, for instance, in prosodic patterns and language choice, the use of discourse markers and slang in a contrastive perspective, the pragmatics of fixed expressions and the impact of English on the teenage vernacular. Most of the articles are corpus-based, and all represent naturally occurring spontaneous conversation. The book will be of interest to linguists, university students and anyone interested in today’s adolescent language and language change.

The book delves into various aspects of youngspeak, such as its relationship with identity, group dynamics, and social interaction, emphasizing the creative and innovative ways in which young people use language. It addresses both spoken and written communication, focusing on how informal language is shaped by peer groups, social media, and global trends. Through case studies from different linguistic communities, the contributors analyze the influence of multilingualism on youth language, exploring how young speakers navigate between different languages and dialects, as well as how they employ code-switching, slang, and borrowed expressions. The book highlights the cross-linguistic similarities and differences in youth language practices, offering insights into the socio-pragmatic aspects of communication among young people.
