Synopsis

3D printing (or, more correctly, additive manufacturing) is the general term for those software-driven technologies that create physical objects by successive layering of materials. Due to recent advances in the quality of objects produced and to lower processing costs, the increasing dispersion and availability of these technologies have major implications not only for manufacturers and distributors but also for users and consumers, raising unprecedented challenges for intellectual property protection and enforcement. This is the first and only book to discuss 3D printing technology from a multidisciplinary perspective that encompasses law, economics, engineering, technology, and policy. Originating in a collaborative study spearheaded by the Hanken School of Economics, the Aalto University and the University of Helsinki in Finland and engaging an international consortium of legal, design and production engineering experts, with substantial contributions from industrial partners, the book fully exposes and examines the fundamental questions related to the nexus of intellectual property law, emerging technologies, 3D printing, business innovation, and policy issues.

Rosa Maria Ballardini (LLM, Ph.D.) is a Senior Lecturer in IP Law at the University of Lapland/School of Law and an Assistant Professor in Intellectual Property Law at Hanken School of Economics (part-time). She was awarded the Ph.D. degree in 2012 at Hanken School of Economics (Helsinki, Finland), the LLM degree in 2005 at the University of Edinburgh (Scotland), and the law degree in 2003 at the University of Brescia (Italy). During 20082009 Ballardini was a Visiting Scholar at UC Berkely, Boalt Hall (California). Ballardini has been involved in research activities (specifically in the field of IP law) since 2003 and is the author of several articles in the specific field of IP law (especially patents and copyright) and technological innovation (software, 3D printing and industrial internet). Prof. Marcus Norrgård (LLD) is Professor of Law at the University of Helsinki, Vaasa Unit of Legal Studies. He was awarded the Doctor of Laws (LL.D.) degree in 2002 and law degree in 1996, both at the University of Helsinki. Norrgård is chairman of the Finnish Copyright Council (Tekijänoikeusneuvosto), editor-in-chief for Tidskrift, utgiven av Juridiska föreningen i Finland, director of the Center of International Economic Law, chairman of the ethics board of the Finnish Franchising Association and member of the board of Nordiskt Immateriellt Rättsskydd (NIR). He has previously served on the Board of the Finnish AIPPI Group and as editor for Tidskrift, utgiven av Juridiska föreningen i Finland (JFT) and Nordiskt Immateriellt Rättsskydd (NIR). He has written extensively on patent law and on IP enforcement. Prof. Jouni Partanen (Ph.D.) is Professor of Mechanical Engineering in Aalto University. He is an academic scientist and an experienced high technology industry leader (fifteen years) in product development, advanced research, production and product management. Dr Jouni Partanen has been a key equipment developer for 3D Systems in California, the leading AM Technology company in the world. He is named as an inventor in more than fifty patents issued internationally in the most significant high technology markets. Prof Partanens academic career spans from university and research laboratory positions in Finland, England and California. He has published in leading international science journals like Nature and Physical Review Letters.
