Artist Jan Rothuizen has walked in cities around the world. And wherever he wanders, he notes down what he sees, thinks and feels. The result is a series of maps, a part drawn, part written reproduction of what he finds on the way, and of what he and others experience by the various places. This book features famous places in Amsterdam, such as the Anne Frank House and the Rijksmuseum, as well as less familiar corners of the city: a houseboat, the city’s most expensive hotel room and a coffee shop. The Soft Atlas of Amsterdam is a uniquely original and charming guide to a thoroughly diverse city.
Jan Rothuizen (b. 1968) is an artist whose work has been exhibited in galleries in the Netherlands and abroad, such as Townhouse in Cairo, De Appel Arts Centre, the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam and the New Museum in New York. His work appears each month in de Volkskrant, a major Dutch newspaper, and he draws museum plans for Amsterdam’s Rijksmuseum.

Orderbook - wwb â"April 2015 newsletter- THE SOFT ATLAS OF AMSTERDAM: JAN ROTHUIZEN. {Cover title: The Soft Atlas of Amsterdam: Hand-Drawn Perpsectives from Daily Life -- Jan Rothuizen. } Niew Amsterdam Uitgevers, Amsterdam, 2014. Distributed in the U. S. A. By University of Chicago Press. 96 pp. With 38 ills. (one col. ). 30 x 23 cm. ISBN 9789046816394 In English. Publisher's description: Graphic designer Jan Rothuizen's best artwork results from simply walking along and encountering new people. For his art, he has wandered around global cities like Cairo, New York, Guangzhou, and Beirut, but his work had yet to treat the city in which he was born and raised -- until now. The Soft Atlas of Amsterdam introduces the idea behind Rothuizen's wildly popular maps of cities. Including many never-before-seen drawings unique to this English-language edition, the atlas presents a fresh interpretation of Amsterdam's places and culture. The drawings, which are best described as written maps or graphic reportage, portray recognizable elements of each location, yet are stylized in a highly original manner that reflects Rothuizen's excellent eye for detail. From the Rijksmuseum to a robbed jewelry store, a heroin clinic to a student apartment, The Soft Atlas of Amsterdam is a delightful tour through a vibrant European city. Full of fun surprises for both the armchair traveler and those who have lived in Amsterdam or visited, this is one collection of maps guaranteed to give readers a view of the city they've never seen before.
