Synopsis

In the 1990s, as concern grew in the United States about the integration of large numbers of immigrants, scholars searching for historical parallels looked to the last great period of immigration, 1880-1914. That example, however, is generally viewed as inapplicable to the current immigration debates in Europe. Paths of Integration turns such conventional wisdom on its head, arguing that the history of European migration more closely parallels the US experience than most realize, due to the largely ignored, but extensive, intra-European migration of the same period. Why do some migrants integrate quickly, while others become long-term minorities? What is the role of the state in the settlement process? To what extent are experiences in the past different from the present? Is Islam an obstacle to integration? These are some of the questions dominating the current politicized debate on immigration in Western Europe and addressed here by leading scholars.
