Synopsis

This volume is published on the occasion on the 25th anniversary of Vesalius College and provides an overview of 25 years of academic research at the College.

Vesalius College was established in 1987 by the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) and Boston University to provide a new form of university education in Belgium. As an American-style college taught in English, the College takes a humanistic approach to intellectual inquiry, encouraging students to not only learn skills and knowledge important to their chosen careers, but to also think critically and develop themselves personally and as citizens of an increasingly multicultural and globalised world.

The College’s teaching methods are characterised by small, interactive classes and continuous assessment. The small class size allows the professors to assess the students’ progress at regular intervals throughout the course, by means of written assignments, oral presentations, mid-term exams etc, rather than nal examination results alone.

Whilst the main focus of Vesalius College is on teaching, it also has a strong research component with over ninety percent of its faculty members holding a PhD. Professors are engaged in academic research, often in partnership with other universities.

The wide variety of subjects discussed in this publication illustrates the diversity which exists amongst the faculty.
