Weathered witness
Relics of the First World War
Few living memories of the First World War remain; many stories have vanished. The Great War is only brought alive by war literature and historical locations. But even historical monuments decay, and not all are easy to reach.
Weathered Witness places evocative black-and-white photographs of forgotten and neglected remains from the Great War face t face with authentic wartime images of the same sites. Today’s photographs present a telling view of the current state of monuments, constructions, and abandoned cemeteries. Images from the time give an exceptional opportunity to catch a glimpse of life ‘behind the scenes’ of the Front.
Wim Degrande and Patrick Goossens are passionate about military history. Patrick Goossens is, furthermore, intensively engaged with black and white photography. Together they explore Great War battlefields and compile a photographic record of unique relics. A penetrating and exceptionally fascinating book of photographs, in which you too can share and cherish the memory that is so quickly being lost.
