Gerd Van Riel is als gewoon hoogleraar antieke filosofie verbonden aan het Hoger Instituut voor Wijsbegeerte (De Wulf-Mansioncentrum) van de KU Leuven. Zijn specialisatiedomein is de filosofie van Plato en de Platoonse traditie.
