Synopsis

This book examines the possibilities emerging for design and architecture by the introduction of novel computer-aided design (CAD) and digital manufacturing techniques. The form studies show the translation of digitally conceived structures into 1:1 physical prototypes. The constructs shown here do not pretend to be perfect finalized objects; they are to be seen as experiments with generative CAD tools, algorithms, and scripting applications, although some of the outcomes look like they are ready to be put into mass production. The insights which arose from these experiments are presented and organized within five production techniques: cross segmentation, accumulation, frameworks, loops, and folding.

À propos de l?auteur

These studies were created dur ing the design seminar analogue-digital' held by Aster ios Agkathidis at the Technical University Dar mstadt's Faculty of Architecture. Aster ios Agkathidis also published Modular Structures in Design and Architecture with BIS Publishers, which is now in its second edition.

À propos de la quatrième de couverture

This book examines the possibilities emerging for design and architecture by the influence of novel computer aided design and digital manufacturing tools and techniques. The studies shown here are focusing in the realisation of the digitally conceived structures into 1/1 physical prototypes. Thus, an index of insights concerning manufacturing techniques in association with structure, material, detailing and design arose. The used structural techniques are divided in five categories, which are emphasized trough out the books formation: cross segmentation, accumulation, frameworks, loops and foldings. Generative CAD tools, algorithms and scripting applications where not only used as design components, but also as devices which helped to rationalise and systematize the production process of complex geometries.

Asterios (born 1974) studied architecture in the Aristotle Univ. of Thessaloniki, the RWTH (Aachen) and the Staedelschule (Frankfurt). He was a partner in the architectural practice b&k+ (Cologne, 2001- 04), and then worked for VMX architects (Amsterdam) until 2005. He founded the architecture and research laboratory a3lab Frankfurt - Thessaloniki, in the same year. Since then he has been practicing architecture and design publishing, exhibiting, winning prizes and realizing projects throughout Europe. Teaching and lecturing experiences include AdbK Nuremberg, TU Darmstadt, the Univ. of Thessaloniki, the Univ. of Bielefeld, the Columbia Univ. and the Staedelschule. He is currently Visiting Associate Professor in the Lebanese American University.
