De symbolen van de revolutie zijn daarbij grotendeels blijven staan, maar dat lijkt alleen de buitenwereld op te vallen. Het land zelf hecht maar weinig waarde en betekenis aan de revolutionaire iconenwereld van weleer, en van een afrekening of beeldenstorm is al helemaal geen sprake. Nieuw Mongolia toont in eerste plaats een land dat op de resten van zeventig jaar socialisme een nieuw bestaan tracht op te bouwen. Jan Locus heeft die erfenis, reconstructie en vernieuwing van stad en steppe in volle vaart weten te grijpen. Zijn foto's tonen de brokstukken van de twintigste eeuw en de kansen die Mongolia voor zich ziet. De arbeiders en stedelingen, de gevangenen en straatkinderen, maar ook de nomaden en hun winnende paarden geven betekenis aan het verleden aan de vooravond van een nieuw Mongolia. Mongolia is een tijdsdocument van een steppewereld die zich op de scheidslijn van noodlot en kans bevindt.nJan Locus (Halle, 1968) woont en werkt in Brussel als freelance fotograaf voor verschillende tijdschriften en vakbladen.
