Etat : very good. Amsterdam : Royal Tropical Institute, 1995. Paperback. Library stamps. 95 pp. - Although early observers found African agricultural systems traditional and conservative, in more recent years we have begun to understand their dynamic nature. This study describes agricultural practices in Sukumaland over a period of a hundred years, for which a relatively large amount of data is available. This information is then used to test several theories of agricultural development. Farming systems dynamics is advocated as giving a more adequate perspective than the usual farming systems research, which has itself had some static tendencies. The land, labour, and capital intensity of systems must be taken into consideration. Labour productivity is seen as a key variable; further, study of Sukumaland indicates that in this setting, rapid population growth does not necessarily lead to land degradation and poverty.
