Since prehistoric times the sea has played a large role in human life. In the case of the Baltic sea the seafaring peoples gained access to trade routes going to the near east via the Gulf of Finland and the rivers on the Karelian isthmus. The Gulf of Bothnia led to Lapland and the arctic and in the west it was possible to reach the North Sea via the Kattegat and Skagerrak. The Baltic shores are the geographical focal point for the essays in this volume. The central theme are the contacts and commercial relations between the inhabitants of the Baltic and the Netherlands. The studies cover the epoch between 1523 (when the personal unions between Denmark, Norway and Sweden ended) and 1814 (when the Danish-Norwegian period ended, and was replaced by a Norwegian-Swedish personal union by the treaty of Kiel).
