Synopsis

Those who have read Mellis’ first book of stories, "Abu The Mystery of the Hundredth Name," will no doubt recognize the title of this unique harmony of the four Gospels. For it plays a role in the Abu Sharif stories. Begun in 1975 as an exercise in his own study of the Gospels, Mellis was amazed at many of the new insights he gained by weaving Matthew, Mark and Luke together. This proved also to be the case for Christian participants in Bible studies where four people represented Matthew, Mark, Luke and John and interchangeably read their respective ‘parts’ aloud. However, Mellis had chosen this unique ‘radio drama’ format for another reason. From his own friendship with Muslim neighbors in the Netherlands, he had learned that they were more deeply touched by experiencing an aspect of the Gospel, than by discussing ideas about it. This volume, therefore, enables them to experience Matthew, Mark, Luke and John as the four authoritative witnesses that God commissioned to write down the one true Gospel story of the events in the life of Jesus and his teachings. As a case in point, Bible translators in the Ivory Coast, at the turn of the century, combined Mellis’ four-voice structure with the Jula translation of the New Testament they were working on. When they then broadcast this ‘radio drama,’ both Muslim and Christian listeners began writing in to express their appreciation.
