Henry, his Australian cousin killed at Gallipoli, has left, in his letters and diaries, a glittering, optimistic account of his travels in Europe and Asia Minor. His own obsession with Heinrich Schliemann, the discoverer of Troy, rivals that of Ben's with Captain Cook. Divided by death and time, the two cousins become involved in each other's lives. Ben, in leaving a country in which he no longer has a place, finds a new life in Australia, in the valley his cousin had loved. As the mystery of Henry's other legacy is unveiled, Ben grows increasingly aware of the rainforest that is opening up around him. Only then can he face the mystery in his own past, that of his survival in the Flanders Salient. ******* WINTER OF THE LYREBIRD evokes in detail the period following the First World War. The novel opens with a deep sense of depression, as Ben has returned from war debilitated and confused by his own survival. The author paints a dismal picture of the Lancashire town with its ty concerns, where Ben struggles to regain a sense of purpose, through his studies of the journeys of Captain Cook. When a series of mysterious incidents gives him the opportunity to it his uncle in Australia, the reader is transported with relief to a sharply contrasting setting that reverberates with heat and physical work. As Ben gets to know his Uncle James, he becomes aware of a different history of hardship, but one which brings with it freedom from the ty morality and confinement of his Lancashire upbringing. There is also an awareness of the bursting life and vivid colour of the rainforest in the background. Ben begins to read the diaries of his dead cousin Henry, killed at Gallipoli.
