When young Michael crossed the stone bridge over the moat of a Dutch castle, he was entering another world. The England of his childhood lay behind him; an unknown life waited ahead.
In post-war Liverpool, he’d been the boy who didn’t join in — not because he didn’t want to, but because he hadn’t learned how. At home, no one said what they felt, and no one asked. He knew his mother loved him, but he didn’t feel her warmth.
Beyond that bridge, at a boarding school, there were friendships, a first love, but insecurity remained. When Henny arrived and showed her emotions, he struggled to understand her.
Belonging to Myself is the story of a man who finally discovered what he’d been missing all along: the ability to see and express what he felt. A memoir about silence, shyness, and the slow courage of learning to look inward — and to speak about what he found there.

In 1948, I was born in Liverpool where we lived with my great-grandmother. When I was six, we moved to our own house on The Wirral and later to Dorking, south of London.I'd started secondary school when my father accepted a job at Philips in the Netherlands. As a family, we moved there, and I went to an international boarding school. No longer having friends in the UK, I decided to remain in the Netherlands, especially after meeting and marrying Henny. With her support, I persevered to achieve a master's in industrial engineering. We moved to Hoofddorp near Amsterdam and soon started a family with a daughter and a son.At KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, I had a career using IT to improve business results. During my last years there, I was an internal consultant to the management board. After retiring at sixty, I continued working as an executive coach.Curious about my mother's ancestors, I researched the family history and wrote Letters from the Past. While Letters from the Past shows where I came from, this book, Belonging to Myself, reaches into who I am.

Paperback. Etat : new. Paperback. This memoir is about how I learned to belong to myself when I've never belonged anywhere else. From an early age I developed survival mechanisms to cope with insecurity and a lack of belonging. I felt uneasy at home and school. Being different has been a recurring theme throughout my life. The resulting shyness eroded my confidence and made me feel like a coward. Not until going to work did I gain confidence and shed some of my shyness.Despite this success, I still lacked emotional intelligence, especially when dealing with family, in particular my self-centred mother. My failure to address issues lead to a tense and stressful relationship between my mother, my wife, and me. My struggle was compounded by cultural differences in my search for belonging.Only after my mother passed away, was I able to shed my survival mechanisms and find my authentic self. Starved of his mother's warmth as a boy, Michael spends decades unable to face her. Only at her deathbed does he find an unspoken reconciliation. This item is printed on demand.
