Violets between Cherry Blossoms is a unique comparative overview of motifs and images from Greece to Japan, exploring cultural flows into the Mediterranean and the Black Sea from the earliest days, Alexander the Great, Greek culture in the Roman Empire, the Silk Road and the spread ofBuddhism to China and Japan. Researcher Pieter Arts feels that the geographical expansion was part of a greater adoption andassimilation of cultures across enormous distances. The second part of the study follows the cultural flow of specific gods, heroes, airborne deities andmonsters from Greece to Japan.

Dit boek bestrijkt een periode van het begin van de vijfde eeuw v. Ch., toen de Griekse invloed het hele Zwarte Zeegebied bestreek, tot op heden.
Het is zeer waarschijnlijk dat al in de vijfde eeuw voor Christus er een aantal indirecte culturele uitwisselingen plaatsvond tussen de Zwarte Zee-regio en China. Dit gebeurde dankzij de rudimentaire wegen tussen deze regio's. In de nasleep van de militaire campagnes van Alexander de Grote (356-323 voor Christus), verspreidde de hellenistische cultuur zich naar de regio's ten oosten en ten zuiden van de Middellandse Zee, waaronder Egypte, Perzië (het huidige Iran), het huidige Afghanistan, Noord-India en de westelijke delen van Centraal-Azië. Omdat zowel de land- en zeeroutes betrouwbaarder werden, verwierf het hellenistische Rome een cruciale positie in het handelsnetwerk. Dit had tot gevolg dat vanaf de tweede tot de zesde eeuw na Christus deze elementen van de Grieks-boeddhistische cultuur geleidelijk hun weg vonden naar China en daarna naar Japan.

'Violets between Cherry Blossoms' is de eerste kritische, maar tevens meeslepende, studie naar de verspreiding van kunstmotieven over een zeer uitgebreid gebied. Het toont overtuigend aan hoe de Griekse beelden en motieven terecht kwamen in het Verre Oosten, over werden genomen in de Chinese kunst, waarna zij uiteindelijk terecht kwamen in Japan.

Pieter Arts promoveerde aan de Universiteit van Leiden, met zijn studie naar de materiële cultuur van Korea en Japan. Hij publiceerde verschillende boeken en artikelen over Japanse kunst.
