Flexible Polyurethane (PUR) foams, in usesince the 1950s and familiar from furnitureupholstery and other domestic textiles, can be found in museum collections innumerous art and design objects. However, these exhibits pose severe conservationproblems due to the ageing of the foamcaused by photo-oxidation, leading todiscoloration, loss of strength and fl exibility, and fi nally the crumbling of theobject. This defi nitive work outlines themost up-to-date methods of restoringfl exibility of older foams and protecting new foams from degradation by coatingthem with stabilising systems actingeffectively as a 'sunblock'. The author, anexperienced conservator, describes theresearch involved in developing the newmethods and their impact on the visual, textural and chemical properties of treatedPUR foams. One of the chapters details thepreparation and application of the lightstabilizing system to PUR foams.

thea van oosten is a senior conservation scientist at the Netherlands Institute for Cultural Heritage Agency of the Netherlands (RCE).

Paperback. Etat : New. Cultural Heritage Agency of the Netherlands; Flexible Polyurethane (PUR) foams have been used since the 1950s in textiles and furniture upholsteries, and in art and design objects that can now be found in museum collections. Composed from ?short-life? consumer materials, these objects present severe conservation problems as they age. This book presents an in-depth examination of the challenges presented by PUR foams; the case studies of preservation of two works by the artist Piero Gilardi; and a manual on preparing and applying a light stabilizing system that can protect new PUR foams from degrading and restore the flexibility of old foams.
