William Shakespeare, the English playwright, poet, and actor, is widely recognized as a brilliant writer and dramatist. Often called England's national poet, he is also known as the 'Bard of Avon'. His works have been translated into every major living language and his works have been adapted into TV shows, movies, musicals, stage plays, etc.
During Shakespeare's lifetime, only a small number of his plays were printed. However, many editions of his works were published in the century after his death. By the early 1700s, he had earned a reputation as the greatest English language poet of all time.
