INTRODUCTION : In 1928 Arne Furumark began to work on the Mycenaean sherd material from the Swedish excavations of the settle- ment at Asine. He never completed this task, which he found exceedingly difficult, since there was no definitive work on Mycenaean pottery. He had to use as a basic work Mykenische Vasen, published in 1886 by Fürtwängler and Löschcke, together with excavation reports and museum catalogues published since that time. He, therefore, decided to produce his own classification, the first volume to deal with chronology (CMP), the second with analysis and classi- fication (MP) and the third, which he never finished, with the history of the development of Mycenaean pottery. He worked from 1930 up to 1936 using as much material as was available to him either by direct handling or from photo- graphs and catalogues. Material published up to 1939 was incorporated in Addenda. Furumark said in his Preface that he regarded his work as 'preliminary and provisional'; it has, nevertheless, been the Mycenaean 'bible' for nearly fifty years. The excavations and research of these years, however, now mean that, although Furumark's work must still be used as a basic text, his study needs considerable revision. LHI has been more precisely identified and it is now apparent that there were very few shapes decorated in the Mycenaean style in this period, most of those assigned to it by Furumark being LHIIA. LHIIA has been divided into a palatial and a domestic style and shown to be also a Mainland style and not a totally Minoan one as Furumark thought. Some shapes and decorations assigned by Furumark to LHIIA are in fact LHIIB, but otherwise LHIIB is as defined by Furumark. LHIIIA1 has been much more precisely defined with the publication of material from Mycenae and the occurrence of some shapes and motifs shown to be more common than Furumark thought. The first half of the LHIIIA2 period cannot be more closely defined since Furumark wrote, as there are no new good LHIIIA2 early assemblages, but the latter half of the period has seen the publication of several groups from Mycenae; these amplify, but do not change Furumark's outline. LHIIIB, in contrast, has seen a great change since Furumark made his study, having been divided on the basis of recent excavations at Mycenae and Tiryns into LHIIIB1 and LHIIIB2; most shapes continue through both of these periods, but decoration in LHIIIB2 is now seen to have some differences from that of LHIIIB1. Ideas on the LHIIIC period have also been greatly revised: many more phases are present than Furumark thought and it has been possible to isolate the duration of certain shapes and motifs at key sites.
