Synopsis

This proceedings volume is the ninth of the series, which is widely recognized as a leading source in the field. It contains 130 presentations from scientists in a wide range of disciplines; all are related to the relevance of N -nitroso compounds to human cancer. Significant advances are presented on the measurement of exposures to N -nitroso compounds (especially those formed endogenously and those arising from tobacco use) and on possible links with several common human cancers. The papers cover the following areas: clinical and epidemiological studies, tobacco/betel-quid carcinogenesis, endogenous formation, measurement of exposure, metabolism, reaction with cellular macromolecules, molecular mechanisms and biological effects. The relevance to human cancer of N -nitroso compounds is an important topic in view of their ubiquitous occurrence, endogenous formation and carcinogenicity in all of the 40 animal species that have been tested. A direct link can be seen between oral cancers and non-combusted tobacco products used for chewing and snuffing, which are rich in N -nitroso compounds and devoid of other known carcinogens. Readership: Oncologists, epidemiologists, clinicians, experimentalists, molecular biologists
