يُعَدُّ القوافي للإمام الأخفش الأوسط (ت 215هـ) أقدم كتاب مستقل وصل إلينا في علم القافية، ومن أهم المصادر المؤسسة لهذا الفن. تناول المؤلف فيه أصول القافية، وأجزاءها، ومصطلحاتها الفنية، والعيوب التي قد تقع فيها، مستندًا إلى استقراء كلام العرب الفصحاء وشواهد الشعر العربي. وقد أصبح هذا الكتاب مرجعًا أساسيًا اعتمد عليه كبار علماء اللغة والأدب، مثل ابن جني، وأبي العلاء المعري، وابن منظور. ولا يزال إلى اليوم من أهم المراجع للباحثين في العروض والقافية، والدراسات اللغوية، والنقد الأدبي العربي.
