It was during this time that he gained first-hand experience of military life and developed an interest in writing about it. After the war, Treynor began writing for various magazines and newspapers, including the Saturday Evening Post, Collier's, and Reader's Digest. He published his first novel, "The Black and the Gray," in 1951, which was well-received and helped establish him as a writer of historical fiction.
