Synopsis
I first thought of writing about my growing up in the idyllic campus of the Titaghur Paper Mill by the Ganges after a reunion of old friends and surviving parents on Christmas Eve of 2016. I wallowed in lethargy for the next 8 years and finally posted a single article on my Facebook pаgе, coincidentally on Christmas of 2024. The response from my readers was refreshingly positive, even more so from those who were not part of my TPM days. They egged me to write more and to be fair, even as I was penning the original article, I realized that there was much more to relive.
The memories started tumbling out, the chapters emerged organically with each preceding one nursing the seeds of the next. The idea of a book took root and here I am today. This is my coming-of-age story in a time capsule of two decades within the privileged confines of an oasis of calm among the political chaos and labour unrest outside. The Mill by the River is about the confluence of British etiquette with middle class Bengali values. If you are a child of confluences, you will perhaps relate to my narration.
About the author:
A Calcutta boy at heart, Deepanjan (Deep) Banerjee travelled and worked all over the world before settling down in the lovely city of Raleigh in North Carolina, USA. He lives with his wife, Parna, his daughter, Arwen and 132 bonsais (of which 130 are pretenders). After slogging in the IT world for thirty years, he now runs his independent strategy consulting practice. An avid bookworm, he takes refuge in his collection of literature, history, photography, travelogues, biographies, sports, arts, bonsai and culinary books. A die-hard soccer fan, he supports Chelsea in England, Barcelona in Spain and is disappointed that Argentina has not offered him honorary citizenship yet.
