Synopsis

The story follows Morris Goldberg, a Jewish immigrant who runs a small shoemaking shop in New York City. He is a hardworking and honest man who is dedicated to his craft and his family. His wife, Leah, is a loving and supportive woman who helps him run the shop. Their daughter, Miriam, is a beautiful and intelligent young woman who dreams of a better life. One day, a wealthy socialite named Mrs. Van der Huyden brings her expensive shoes to Morris to be repaired. Morris does an excellent job, and Mrs. Van der Huyden is so impressed that she offers him a job as her personal shoemaker. Morris is hesitant at first, but he eventually accepts the offer, hoping to provide a better life for his family. Working for Mrs. Van der Huyden exposes Morris to the world of the rich and famous. He meets other wealthy clients and learns about their extravagant lifestyles. However, he also sees the dark side of wealth and privilege. Mrs. Van der Huyden is a cold and selfish woman who only cares about herself. Her daughter, Beatrice, is a spoiled and rebellious teenager.
